The rural municipality of Saku is characterised by picturesque scenery and the atmosphere of the surrounding countryside, the fields and forests and the white sandy beaches on the shores of the lakes of Männiku. Its proximity to the capital Tallinn makes the district logistically attractive for all kinds of business and entrepreneurial activity. The community is situated in Harju County, bordered to the north by Tallinn, to the south by Rapla county and Kohila rural municipality, to the east by the municipalities of Kiili and Kose, and to the west by Saue rural municipality. The territory of the municipality is 171 km2, the Pärnu Road marks its western border and the Viljandi Road its eastern border. Vääna River flows through the town of Saku, and the Viljandi River along its southern border. The community was founded in 1866, and reestablished on the 16th of January 1992. The attractive geographical location of the community makes the area a desirable place to live. The centre of the community is the town of Saku (4678 inhabitants). Driving to the capital, Tallinn, takes less than half an hour. Three quarters of the population inhabit the three towns of the community Saku, Kiisa, and Kurtna amid peace and quiet and beautiful greenery. The remainder of the 8196 inhabitants of the community (01.01.2007) live in the smaller villages. During the vacation period  from spring to autumn, the population increases by a couple of thousand holiday makers. Several enterprises involved in gardening are active in and around Saku, and the number of inhabitants is growing constantly as can be seen by the number of people converting summer cottages into houses. Also, there are several new housing estates being planned. According to approximate estimates, the number of inhabitants should double in the decade ahead.
